Canada adds a member of the First Nations to the Bank of Canada's board
Thursday, the Canadian government filled three seats on the Bank of Canada board with finance veterans, including Ernie Daniels, who is likely the first member of the First Nations to serve on the central bank's board, according to a bank spokesperson.
The board of the Bank of Canada picks its governor and provides overall oversight of the institution's management and administration. The government appoints the board's 12 independent directors to three-year terms.
Daniels and the other two appointments, David Dominy and Shelley Williams, "have extensive experience in accounting, capital markets, and financial management from a variety of companies and sectors," according to a statement from Canada's finance minister.
Daniels, a member of the Salt River First Nation in Canada's Northwest Territories, has over 35 years of experience in senior financial administration and has served as chief executive officer of the non-profit First Nations Finance Authority since 2012.
Daniels is, to the best of our knowledge, the first board member from a First Nation in the bank's nearly 90-year history, according to a spokeswoman.
According to the finance ministry, Williams is an accountant who has held high roles at large global public corporations, while Dominy was most recently the CEO of FIRMA Foreign Exchange Corp.
