Gold prices fell below crucial levels in Asian trade on Monday, as speculators reassess wagers that the Federal Reserve will begin cutting interest rates earlier in 2024, owing to good labour market statistics.

Spot prices plummeted below $2,000 per ounce, a significant reversal from last week's record highs. As risk sentiment improved, the yellow metal was supported by a strong dollar and hints of economic improvement in the United States.

Spot gold declined 0.4% to $1,996.24 per ounce, while February gold futures fell 0.1% to $2,012.75 per ounce by 23:19 ET (04:19 GMT). Both instruments were trading around $150 lower than their previous week's highs.

A Fed meeting is on the horizon, and rate cuts in March are in doubt.

Traders were especially apprehensive of gold ahead of the Fed meeting later this week, where the central bank is largely expected to hold interest rates steady.

However, the Fed's projection for relaxing monetary policy in 2024 will be keenly watched, especially given recent data showing a healthy labour market in the United States.

Following Friday's nonfarm payrolls report, markets drastically reduced expectations for a rate decrease as soon as March 2024, causing gold to plummet.

Risk appetite strengthened as a result of the reading, as it indicated just enough strength in the US economy to allow for a "soft landing." While gold prices sank, stock markets rose.

Aside from the Fed, the Bank of England, European Central Bank, and Swiss National Bank all have interest rate decisions this week, with all three likely to suggest higher-for-longer interest rates.

Higher interest rates weigh on gold prices by increasing the opportunity cost of investing in the yellow metal, which provides no returns.

Inflation data for November in the United States is also due later this week.
