ETH

According to Arkham Intelligence's on-chain data, the Ethereum Foundation (EF) made no public announcement about the transaction, but on March 30 it completed its largest single staking operation in history, depositing 23,054 ETH into the ETH2 Beacon Deposit Contract, which currently worth about $46.2 million.

At the time of the operation, ETH was trading between $2,004 and $2,060, up 2.9% in 24 hours and 11.3% over the previous month. ETH is still more than 60% below its 2021 all-time high.

How the EF Got Here: 14 Months of Deliberate Positioning

We didn't make this choice on the spur of the moment. Since the early years of 2025, the foundation has been carefully putting a plan into action for how to handle its money. The staking operation is the most recent step in this process.

The first time decentralized finance was tried was by EF in January 2025, when it set aside 50,000 ETH to test transactions on Aave to see how liquid it was and how stable the protocol was. It moved 81,000 ETH between Aave, Lido, Compound, and Spark in stages by February 2025, showing that it planned to actively use idle funds. A payment of 2,016 ETH was made to start the official staking program in February 2026 through Bitwise Onchain Solutions. This was backed up by a public promise to stake a sum of about 70,000 ETH.

This means that about 36% of the goal of 70,000 ETH has been wagered, or about 25,000 ETH over all. The deal that went through on March 30 brought in 23,054 ETH. There are currently 147,471 ETH owned by the charity, which is worth around $302 million.

This change is a result of a policy change that was made official by the European Fund in 2025. Instead of just holding on to assets, the policy is changing so that reserves are actively used to "generate reasonable returns while ensuring financial soundness and supporting long-term ecosystem growth."

Selling and Staking Simultaneously: Contradiction or Rational Allocation?

The market automatically sees big EF staking operations as signs of strength—lack of supply and long-term conviction. The on-chain statistics makes that story more complicated.

Vitalik Buterin sold about 17,196 ETH in February alone. The money from those sales went to open-source hardware and software development for use in business and government. The EF sells ETH on the open market on a regular basis to meet its costs, which are said to be around $100 million a year.

A normal liquidity stratification framework gets rid of the perceived contradiction. The foundation has a large ETH treasury. Selling some of it into stablecoins covers short-term running costs, while staking another part of it for long-term holdings earns about 3.5% a year. These are various pools that are used for various purposes. The goal of staking 70,000 ETH would produce about 2,450 ETH per year, which is worth about $4.9 million at the moment. This is a good subsidy, but it's not going to solve the problem of a $100 million yearly cost base.

The more important question that the data raises is one that the EF has not answered: was the choice to lock up a lot of ETH at $2,004, which is still a big drop from its high point in 2021, a long-term fundamental bet on ETH's recovery, or was it just a matter of optimizing the treasury? Since there has been no announcement, that view is completely open.

The EF's record staking shows that institutions have faith in Ethereum's long-term staking yield as a way to get back spare assets. At 0.2% of the total network stake (34 million ETH is currently staked), the action is too small to change network-level metrics. However, as a signal from the institution that created the protocol, it has more weight than its size suggests. To get an idea of how fast the foundation wants to move from liquid to staked funds, keep an eye on how fast new deposits are made toward the 70,000 ETH goal.
